What is a Photofacial?

You may know someone who has had a Photofacial, or you might have seen it advertised as a noninvasive way to restore skin tone and improve skin discoloration issues.  A Photofacial is an office-based facial treatment with minimal to no downtime that uses intense pulsed light, also known as IPL, to “lighten, brighten and tighten” facial skin.  The IPL Photofacial effectively treats areas of facial skin discoloration such as sun spots, age spots, freckles, rosacea or red/pink skin discoloration, and even acne.

The treatment typically lasts about 15-20 minutes and is virtually painless.  A numbing cream is applied to the face before the treatment to avoid any discomfort.  There is almost no downtime, with only several hours of redness after the treatment.  There is no skin peeling or swelling, and patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately, wearing makeup if desired.

Results may be seen after only one treatment, but to achieve the maximum result, at least three treatments, about one month apart, are recommended.  Whether treating pigmentation issues, redness or rosacea, skin tone issues, or acne, patients will have a much more clear and rejuvenated complexion after a series of Photofacial treatments.  Although the IPL Photofacial is an excellent treatment for the issues mentioned above, it is not indicated for the treatment of facial lines and wrinkles – these are more appropriately treated with laser resurfacing or microneedling, both of which we also offer.

Martin Plastic Surgery is excited to offer the IPL Photofacial to Dothan, Alabama and the Tri-State area.  If you would like to learn more, please contact us at (334) 305-0305 to schedule a consultation!
